Welcome! All of my pieces are crafted from only natural-colored gemstones and either sterling silver or 14k gold-filled or gold vermeil findings. I do not use any stones that have been dyed; neither do I use man-made materials. Also, please don’t hesitate to contact me for a custom order. We can work together to create something that will be perfect for you!
“Poésie” in French means “poetry”.
Back when I first decided to call my business Poesies, oh, probably back around 1991, I was looking at “posy rings” and I loved the romantic idea. Posy or “posie” rings are plain rings with inscriptions inside them that are exchanged by lovers. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posie_ring, this practice began to be popular in the 15th century. “They were used as a lover's token, a wedding ring, or simply as a means of showing regard or giving a gift.”
The funny thing is, I never expected Poesies to sell jewelry, since I had never made any. I was working in the fashion industry back then, and I was thinking I’d make a line of wedding gowns or evening wear, which was my specialty back when I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Things change. And we must simply trust that, as strange and painful as some of the stuff that happens is, that it is always for the better. That only the divine being (or beings, depending on your religious tradition!) knows what is truly going to happen, and that divine being loves and cares for you, and wants the best for you.
Around 1990 I began having severe headaches and physical exhaustion. In the following years, I found it almost impossible to keep a job due to these physical problems. And all the doctors I went to could find nothing and told me that I was perfectly healthy.
In 2004 the pain became widespread throughout my body, and the exhaustion became worse. In 2006 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The good news was that I had a name for what was wrong with me, and it wasn’t all in my head! The bad news was that there isn’t any cure for fibromyalgia. Treatment options include either taking prescription drugs and staying drugged up all the time, or exploring alternative medicine.
Massage and yoga finally got my heart to open up enough to believe that things could get better, and to really try to understand what was wrong, instead of just accepting a diagnosis of a condition that had no cure. A psychiatrist diagnosed me with PTSD due to an emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually abusive childhood. And all along I thought that what I was dealing with was “normal”! Dysfunctional parents tend to make you believe that.
In 2005, I taught myself how to make bead jewelry. I was working for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and I became intrigued by the healing power of various stones.
In 2010, I began making more and more items in earnest, and I opened the Poesies shop. And I found myself gradually becoming fully cured of my fibromyalgia. I don’t really know if it was the healing power in the stones that I was working with, or simply the act of creation, or any of the other therapies I've tried, but I’m certainly not complaining!
I hope that my creations help you in your spiritual and healing journeys, wherever you find yourself to be on those paths.
